Proton Pass at a glance
Checked 15 Oct 2026Proton Pass is a hosted password manager. Its Android, iOS, shared Rust core and CLI clients are GPL-3.0 on GitHub (the web and browser extension code is in Proton's WebClients repo), but the server is not open, so you need a Proton account and cannot self-host. Apps exist for Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android and major browsers. Cure53 audited the mobile apps, browser extensions and API; Proton says all issues but one medium finding were fixed. Some features need a paid Proton plan.
RepoQuarry. “Proton Pass.” Checked 15 Oct 2026. https://repoquarry.dev/projects/proton-passHow much of 1Password does it replace?
2 of 6 jobs. Hosted vault with open clients; not self-hostable. Sharing, passkeys and other parity not checked.
For family and team password sharing, two-factor (TOTP) codes, passkey storage, breach and weak-password alerts (Watchtower), see other 1Password alternatives. You may also need to build an interface, an API server and hosting yourself.
