pass (password-store) at a glance
Checked 15 Oct 2026pass is a small shell script (latest release 1.7.4) that stores each password as a GPG-encrypted file and can sync the store with git. GPL-2.0 or later. The GitHub repo is a mirror and its last commit was June 2025, so it is mature but slow-moving. It is command-line only: autofill, mobile and GUI use come from community clients (passff, browserpass, Password Store for Android, passforios, Pass4Win). You must manage GPG keys yourself. No sharing UI, no TOTP without the pass-otp extension.
RepoQuarry. “pass (password-store).” Checked 15 Oct 2026. https://repoquarry.dev/projects/passHow much of 1Password does it replace?
2 of 6 jobs. CLI vault with git sync; autofill only through third-party browser plugins. For technical users.
For family and team password sharing, two-factor (TOTP) codes, passkey storage, breach and weak-password alerts (Watchtower), see other 1Password alternatives. You may also need to build an interface, an API server and hosting yourself.
