Tuwunel at a glance
Checked 15 Oct 2026Tuwunel is a Rust Matrix homeserver (Apache-2.0) and the official successor to conduwuit, sponsored by the Swiss government. It ships as a static binary, Docker image and Debian, RPM, Arch, Alpine and Nix packages with an embedded RocksDB database, so it is simpler to run than Synapse. It is only the server: people chat through Element or another Matrix client. No hardware sizing is published, and there is no Windows or macOS build documented.
RepoQuarry. “Tuwunel.” Checked 15 Oct 2026. https://repoquarry.dev/projects/tuwunelHow much of Slack does it replace?
3 of 5 jobs. Server only; pair with Element or another Matrix client. Calls, search and bots depend on the client and add-ons.
For voice and video huddles, search and message history, see other Slack alternatives. You may also need to build an interface, an API server and hosting yourself.
