Clean up a full Windows drive with open-source tools
Find out what is filling your PC, then clear junk, caches and duplicates with free tools, instead of a PC cleaner subscription.
Instead of paying for WizTree commercial licence, TreeSize Personal and Professional or CCleaner.
What you'll build
A clean-up kit for a Windows PC that is running out of space. First you see exactly where the space went: which folders, which file types, which single files. Then you clear what is safe to clear: temporary files, browser caches, old installers and duplicate photos or videos. It is the job CCleaner Professional and paid disk analysers such as TreeSize and WizTree's commercial licence charge for. Every tool here is free, works offline and shows you each file before anything is deleted.
Blueprint
WinDirStat maps the drive and points at the folders that matter. Czkawka checks those folders for duplicates and forgotten big files. BleachBit clears temporary files and browser caches. Run WinDirStat again to see what you won back.

Step by step
Install commands change, so each step links to the repo's own docs for the exact commands.
-
Map the drive with WinDirStat
Install WinDirStat and scan your system drive. Choose "Run Elevated" from the File menu for the fast full-drive scan. Sort by size, open Largest Files and note the three or four folders that take the most space. Write down the used space before you start.

-
Check those folders for duplicates
Download Krokiet (the current Czkawka app). Add the folders you noted, such as Pictures, Videos and Downloads, and run the Duplicates tool by hash, then Big Files. Keep one copy of each duplicate and review the rest before deleting. Similar Images catches resized copies of the same photo.

Clear junk with BleachBit
Install BleachBit, tick temporary files and the caches of the browsers you use, and press Preview. Read the list, untick anything you want to keep (saved passwords, cookies for sites you stay signed in to), then Clean. Close browsers first so their caches are not in use.
-
Leave Windows' own data to Windows
Windows Update downloads, old Windows installations and restore points are best removed through Settings, System, Storage (Storage Sense and Cleanup recommendations), which know what Windows still needs.
-
Scan again and compare
Refresh the WinDirStat scan and compare the used space with your note from step one. Save the results to CSV if you want a record for next time.

Watch out
BleachBit deletes for real, without the Recycle Bin, so read its preview first. Leave Windows' own folders to Windows (Settings, Storage). WinDirStat's fast NTFS scan needs admin rights.
Take it further
- Run BleachBit from its command line on a schedule with Task Scheduler once you trust your selection.
- Use WinDirStat's command-line export to save a monthly CSV and watch which folders grow.
- Point Czkawka at an external drive or NAS share to find duplicate backups.
Questions
Is this safe?
All three tools show you the files before anything is removed, and nothing runs on its own. BleachBit deletes permanently, so read its preview and keep a backup of anything you are unsure about.
Does it work on Windows 10 and 11?
Yes. BleachBit 6 needs Windows 10 or 11; WinDirStat and Krokiet support both.
What about CCleaner's driver and app updaters?
This kit does not replace them. Windows Update handles drivers, and winget (built into Windows) can update most installed apps.
