Local search engine with an Elasticsearch-compatible API and MCP server that indexes folders so coding agents can query code instead of reading files.
Free tool inMCP servers and agent tools
XERJ at a glance
Checked 18 Oct 2026XERJ is a single Rust binary that auto-indexes a folder (code with symbols, docs, logs, PDFs, CSVs) and serves full-text and vector search over an Elasticsearch-compatible API, plus an MCP server and setup for Claude Code and Cursor. It also stores agent memory. Default embeddings work offline; a neural model is an optional ~90 MB download. The quick start runs with no TLS or auth, meant for one user on localhost. Apache-2.0. The README asks users and agents to send a field-report pull request. It is a free tool and does not replace a paid product.

Nothing people pay for: it’s a free tool, listed because people search for it. Find similar projects in MCP servers and agent tools.

Where these numbers come from
- Stars, forks, releases: GitHub's public API, fetched every night (last fetch today).
- Star history: counted every night since 18 Oct 2026; the dashed part before that is estimated from the dates people starred the repo.
- Commits and people committing: GitHub's repository statistics, counted weekly. Names are never stored.
- Pull requests and issues: counted from GitHub for the last 30 days.
- Stars show popularity, not quality. The facts below are checked separately, by reading the project's own documentation. How we check.
