# pass (password-store)

> pass is a small shell script (latest release 1.7.4) that stores each password as a GPG-encrypted file and can sync the store with git. GPL-2.0 or later. The GitHub repo is a mirror and its last commit was June 2025, so it is mature but slow-moving. It is command-line only: autofill, mobile and GUI use come from community clients (passff, browserpass, Password Store for Android, passforios, Pass4Win). You must manage GPG keys yourself. No sharing UI, no TOTP without the pass-otp extension.

## What it replaces
- 1Password: Password vault with autofill, Vault sync across devices (partial). CLI vault with git sync; autofill only through third-party browser plugins. For technical users.
