# OpenMAIC

> OpenMAIC (v1.3.1, Nov 2026, ~42k stars) is a self-hosted web app from Tsinghua's MAIC team. Give it a topic or your own files and AI agents build a lesson with slides, quizzes, simulations, whiteboard drawing and narration, exportable as PPTX or offline HTML. MIT, with one bundled LGPL package. It needs Node.js 22 or Docker, PostgreSQL and AI models you choose: cloud API keys by default, or local Ollama, Lemonade or FunASR. Leave ACCESS\_CODE unset and anyone who can reach the server controls the library. Upgrades from 1.3.0 need care.

## What it replaces
Nothing people pay for: a free tool, listed because people search for it.

## Facts, with sources

| Question | Status | Answer | Source | Checked |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Runs on my machine? | Confirmed | Yes; you host the app yourself, and AI can come from cloud APIs or local Ollama, Lemonade or FunASR | https://github.com/THU-MAIC/OpenMAIC#lemonade-local-ai | 2026-11-03 |
| Code licence | Confirmed | MIT; the bundled mathml2omml package is LGPL-3.0-or-later | https://github.com/THU-MAIC/OpenMAIC/blob/main/LICENSE | 2026-11-03 |
| Model weights licence | Confirmed | No model weights included; it calls models you choose (OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini, DeepSeek, Ollama and others) | https://github.com/THU-MAIC/OpenMAIC#-quick-start | 2026-11-03 |
| Commercial use | Confirmed | Yes; the README says MIT allows free commercial use. The bundled LGPL package keeps its own terms | https://github.com/THU-MAIC/OpenMAIC#-partnerships | 2026-11-03 |
| Paid services needed? | Partial | None strictly required if you run local models; the default setup expects an AI provider key such as OpenAI | https://github.com/THU-MAIC/OpenMAIC#2-configure | 2026-11-03 |
| Hardware | Partial | No minimum figures stated; local AI models (VoxCPM, FunASR) run on your own hardware, and Fun-ASR-Nano wants an NVIDIA GPU | https://github.com/THU-MAIC/OpenMAIC#optional-voxcpm2-self-hosted-tts-with-voice-cloning | 2026-11-03 |
| Operating systems | Partial | Self-hosted web app (Node.js or Docker) used in a browser; Docker on Linux is mentioned, no OS list given | https://github.com/THU-MAIC/OpenMAIC/blob/main/packages/docs/content/docs/deployment.mdx | 2026-11-03 |
| Setup effort | Confirmed | Medium; Docker Compose, or Node.js 22, pnpm and PostgreSQL 16, plus API keys and a YAML model config | https://github.com/THU-MAIC/OpenMAIC#docker-deployment | 2026-11-03 |
