# Macro

> Macro (about 5.6k stars, near-daily releases, v2026.10.28.3 on 29 Oct 2026) is a Rust and SolidJS monorepo from the company behind macro.com. One app holds a Gmail client, Slack-style channels and DMs, CRDT markdown docs, tasks with list and board views, a CRM board built from email, recorded calls, and agents with shared team memory. The code moved from BSL to AGPL-3.0 on 31 May 2026. The main offer is hosted plans (Free, Pro $40, Max $200 per seat a month). The FAQ says self-hosting is allowed but not a focus; the documented path is a developer Docker stack with stubbed integrations.

## What it replaces
- Notion: Notes, Wikis and docs (partial). Collaborative markdown docs in folders, with tags, comments and version history; no nested pages or Notion-style databases.
  - Use it instead of paying for Notion? Personal use: Partly (Runs locally only in part: Self-hosting is allowed under the AGPL but is not a focus yet; the only documented route…). Business: Partly.
- Slack: Channels and direct messages, Threaded conversations, Voice and video huddles, Search and message history (partial). Team and private channels, DMs, inline threads and searchable history; calls use LiveKit, which self-hosters must license or turn off, and there is no Slack-style app directory.
  - Use it instead of paying for Slack? Personal use: Partly (Runs locally only in part: Self-hosting is allowed under the AGPL but is not a focus yet; the only documented route…). Business: Partly.
- Salesforce Sales Cloud: Contacts and company accounts, Deal pipeline by stage, Email and calendar sync (partial). Contacts and companies build themselves from Gmail threads and sit on a stage board; calendar sync, forecasting and sales reports are not documented.
  - Use it instead of paying for Salesforce Sales Cloud? Personal use: Partly (Runs locally only in part: Self-hosting is allowed under the AGPL but is not a focus yet; the only documented route…). Business: Partly.
- ClickUp: Tasks, assignees and deadlines, Kanban task boards (partial). Tasks with status, priority and assignee in list or board layout, synced with GitHub pull requests; due dates and Gantt timelines are not documented.

## Facts, with sources

| Question | Status | Answer | Source | Checked |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Runs on my machine? | Partial | Self-hosting is allowed under the AGPL but is not a focus yet; the only documented route is a developer Docker stack (Postgres, Redis, LocalStack, OpenSearch, Kafka, FusionAuth) with stubbed integrations. Hosted Macro is the main product | https://github.com/macro-inc/macro/blob/main/apps/docs/faq.mdx | 2026-10-29 |
| Code licence | Confirmed | AGPL-3.0 for the whole monorepo (OSI copyleft, moved from BSL on 31 May 2026); a separate licence is sold for closed-source use. A leftover apps/web/LICENSE file from 2023 still says "All rights reserved" | https://github.com/macro-inc/macro/blob/main/LICENSE.txt | 2026-10-29 |
| Model weights licence | Confirmed | No model weights; agents call hosted models (OpenAI, Google, Anthropic and others) chosen in a model picker | https://github.com/macro-inc/macro#agents-and-unified-team-level-memory | 2026-10-29 |
| Commercial use | Confirmed | Commercial use allowed under AGPL-3.0; if you build on Macro or offer a modified version over a network you must share that source under the AGPL, or buy a different licence from Macro | https://github.com/macro-inc/macro/blob/main/apps/docs/faq.mdx | 2026-10-29 |
| Paid services needed? | Partial | Self-hosting needs no Macro plan, but the FAQ says you must hold your own licences for LiveKit (calls), FusionAuth (sign-in) and PostHog (analytics) or turn them off; Gmail, agents and GitHub need your own Google/GitHub OAuth apps. Hosted plans: Free, Pro $40 and Max $200 per seat a month | https://github.com/macro-inc/macro/blob/main/apps/docs/faq.mdx | 2026-10-29 |
| Hardware | Unknown | Not documented | none found | - |
| Operating systems | Partial | The local stack is documented for Linux (Nix supplies Docker) and macOS (with Docker Desktop, OrbStack or Colima); Windows is not mentioned. Releases include macOS (Apple silicon) and Linux AppImage desktop clients, and the hosted app runs in a browser and on iOS | https://github.com/macro-inc/macro/blob/main/docs/development/running-locally.md#run-the-local-stack | 2026-10-29 |
| Setup effort | Confirmed | Hard; a Nix dev shell and \`just run\_local --no-doppler\` build the Rust services and start Postgres, Redis, LocalStack, OpenSearch, Kafka and FusionAuth in Docker, and Gmail, agents, GitHub and billing stay stubbed until you supply your own OAuth and API keys. No production self-hosting guide | https://github.com/macro-inc/macro/blob/main/docs/development/running-locally.md#run-the-local-stack | 2026-10-29 |

- [Synapse (Matrix) with Element](https://repoquarry.dev/projects/synapse.md): Reference Matrix homeserver from Element; pair it with Element apps for federated, end-to-end encrypted rooms, DMs, threads and calls.
- [Twenty](https://repoquarry.dev/projects/twenty.md): Open-source CRM with people, companies, opportunity pipelines, Gmail/Outlook sync, workflows and dashboards; AGPL-3.0 with some enterprise-licensed files.
- [Rocket.Chat](https://repoquarry.dev/projects/rocket-chat.md): Open core, self-hosted team chat with channels, threads, DMs, apps and federation; free Starter (50 users) and MIT Community editions.
- [Buzz](https://repoquarry.dev/projects/buzz.md): Block's self-hostable workspace where people and AI agents share channels, threads, DMs, canvases, workflows and git, built on a Nostr relay.
- [Zulip](https://repoquarry.dev/projects/zulip.md): Apache-2.0 team chat built around topic-based threads in channels, self-hosted on Ubuntu or Debian or used as hosted Zulip Cloud.
