# goose

> goose (v1.55.0, October 2026) is an Apache-2.0 AI agent that runs on your machine, with a desktop app for macOS, Linux and Windows, a CLI and an API. It edits files and runs shell commands through its Developer extension, connects to 70+ MCP extensions and runs headless in GitHub Actions. It works with 15+ providers, local models via Ollama or LM Studio, or your existing Claude, ChatGPT or Gemini subscription. A VS Code extension is experimental.

## What it replaces
- Claude Code: Edit code across a repo from the terminal with an AI agent, Run commands and tests, Use the agent inside VS Code or JetBrains, Connect tools and data through MCP, Write commits and pull requests, Run the agent headless in scripts or CI (GitHub Actions) (partial). CLI and desktop agent with MCP and GitHub Actions; the VS Code extension is experimental, its docs list no JetBrains plugin, and results depend on your model.
  - Use it instead of paying for Claude Code? Personal use: Yes. Business: Yes.
- Cursor: Let an agent plan and edit across many files, Run terminal commands and tests from the agent, Connect tools and data through MCP (partial). A general-purpose agent beside your editor rather than an AI editor; no tab completion or cloud background agents.
  - Use it instead of paying for Cursor? Personal use: Yes. Business: Yes.
