# Dyad

> Dyad (v1.19.0, October 2026) is a desktop app for Windows and macOS, with experimental Linux builds. You chat, it writes a React/JavaScript app into a normal Git folder on your machine and shows a live preview. It works with Gemini, OpenAI, Anthropic, OpenRouter, or local models via Ollama or LM Studio. Supabase or Neon can be connected for a backend; publishing is up to you (the docs use GitHub and Vercel). JavaScript apps only, no native mobile apps. Most code is Apache-2.0; src/pro is fair-source (FSL-1.1) and backs the optional paid Dyad Pro.

## What it replaces
- Lovable: Build a full-stack web app from a chat prompt, See the running app update as it is built, Add a database (partial). Builds and previews JavaScript web apps locally; backend via your own Supabase or Neon account; no built-in hosting or click-to-edit UI.
- Bolt.new: Build a full-stack web app from a chat prompt, Run and preview the app in the browser (WebContainers), Add a database and login (Bolt Database / Supabase) (partial). Runs apps with Node.js on your machine instead of in the browser; no built-in hosting; hybrid (web-tech) mobile apps only.

## Facts, with sources

| Question | Status | Answer | Source | Checked |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Runs on my machine? | Confirmed | Yes, desktop app; your app code stays in a folder on your computer | https://www.dyad.sh/docs | 2026-10-15 |
| Code licence | Partial | Apache-2.0 for most code; src/pro is Functional Source License 1.1 (fair-source, not OSI) | https://github.com/dyad-sh/dyad#license | 2026-10-15 |
| Model weights licence | Confirmed | No separate model weights | https://github.com/dyad-sh/dyad#readme | 2026-10-15 |
| Commercial use | Partial | Core is Apache-2.0; the src/pro folder is under FSL-1.1, which restricts competing commercial use | https://github.com/dyad-sh/dyad#license | 2026-10-15 |
| Paid services needed? | Partial | Not required with local models (Ollama, LM Studio) or free API tiers; cloud model APIs and Dyad Pro are optional | https://www.dyad.sh/docs/guides/ai-models/local-models | 2026-10-15 |
| Hardware | Confirmed | Any machine that can run Node.js; local models need much more, and the docs suggest cloud models on weaker machines | https://www.dyad.sh/docs/faq | 2026-10-15 |
| Operating systems | Confirmed | Windows and macOS (Intel and Apple Silicon); Linux builds are experimental and untested | https://www.dyad.sh/docs/faq | 2026-10-15 |
| Setup effort | Confirmed | Easy; download the installer, install Node.js, then add an API key or a local model | https://www.dyad.sh/docs/getting-started/quickstart | 2026-10-15 |
